We support chimpanzees in the Budongo Forest in Uganda through our work with the Budongo Conservation Field Station (BCFS).Ĭombining research and conservation to ensure sustainable management and use of the forest reserve, the BCFS team monitors the health of wild chimp populations and also works with local communities helping to dissuade hunters from setting bush meat snares. Our chimpanzees are part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP). Sadly, chimps are hunted to supply the bushmeat trade, and hunters also kill individuals within a group in order to remove infants and sell them on to the illegal pet trade. The enclosure was specially designed to stimulate the chimps to use and show natural physical, social and mental behaviours that would be observed in the wildĬhimps face numerous threats in the wild from habitat destruction, to snares set catch local wildlife.The indoor rooms, or ‘pods’, all have different environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity and lighting, so each chimp can choose their preferred hangout.The outdoor area boasts a huge climbing frame and plenty of vegetation, giving our chimps great opportunities for fun, foraging and exercise.With such large living quarters, Budongo Trail can actually house up to 40 chimps.Home to our chimp troop, the exhibit allows you to watch these amazing creatures and learn all about the links between humans and our closest relative. They use and modify a wide variety of objects in their environment for tools so our keepers spend much of their day thinking up new and ingenious ways of enriching the troopīudongo Trail is one of the world's most innovative and interactive chimpanzee enclosures.
